Meal/calorie Flashcards
(dieting for geeks)
There's been a slight backwards motion going on around here...a little more beer, a little less calorie counting...(though a lot more happiness, it must be admitted, due to the farmhouse waiting for us in the near future) and I'm concerned because it has felt so good to make actual progress for once and not be alarmed that every time I hope on the scale it's going to be one notch higher. That's a very sad merry go round to be on and I've been very happy to not be on it.So I figured it was time to get a little more organized. It's going to be tough to stay completely on track during this whole escrow and move thing. I know for a fact that I will drink more beer, eat out more often, and need the comfort of old habits more. However, I plan to keep it all in check in spite of myself. I started by doing some more work on my calorie flashcards. My original intention was to put all the recipes I make on recipe cards with the calorie information included so I can plan my meals more easily and have the calorie work already mapped out for me so I can keep track on a daily basis with less effort.
However, writing down the recipes implies that I have to also write the instructions for each one and that is tedious and I was avoiding it. Then I realized that while I am a thorough gal and this might be the ideal thing to do, this is my fucking life and I don't have to write the instructions if I don't want to. Not right away anyway. Not until someone asks me for my recipes and how to make them. I already know how to cook my own food.
So I have modified it so that I am writing meals I frequently eat on the front of the index cards showing with and without cheese options where appropriate, this is for easy reference. On the back (in cases where this is appropriate) I am writing an ingredient list. This will help me with planning meals and grocery shopping.
Having done some work on my index cards last night made it easy to choose my breakfast from my list of options (I have several breakfast cards) and easy to know instantly what caloric impact that choice will have. This medium sized home made pita bread (multi-grain, in case you were curious) has two tablespoons of yogurt cheese on it and two tablespoons of preserves on it.250 calories
This is a stupid bad picture but can I tell you what a fabulous lunch it was? One slice of toast with a pat of butter, plus 1 cup of spaghetti squash, 1/2 cup home made marinara sauce, and two tablespoons of Parmesan cheese.275 calories
Both of these meals were light and I will need plenty more sustenance later, but I got filled plenty by both of them and all for a whopping 525 calories. All I have left is one or two snacks and dinner. I know I'm a dork for getting excited about this but I can't wing it with meals or I will wing it with lots of cheese. I have already worked out the calories for pita pizzas and it's not too bad, especially if two of my other main meals were so light and yet satisfying.
So I'm loving this organization thing and I think it's going to help. My plan is to document, one day each week, every single food and drink item I put into my mouth and show what my calorie intake was for that day. Then I'm going to post it. I want all of you to do the same (though for those of you not counting calories you can omit that part). EVERY LITTLE BITE. Scared? C'mon...don't you think it would be interesting and cool to see what we're all eating in one single day? Even if it's a day on which you're being very very good...I still want to see.
Anyway, I have to go walk the dog and then get back to my part time job which actually has a deadline.

Good idea for the flash cards. I was wondering why you would need to write instructions for yourself on how to cook squash...
Anyway, I did want to say that (and remember, I'm NOT judging you) why the HELL do you need 2 tbsp of parmesan cheese on a cup of squash? Why don't you just have 1 tbsp and an apple, for Christ's sake! If you KNOW you're going to be drinking more beer, don't load up on extra parmesan when you could add an apple for a tenth of the fat and probably the same amount of calories. (duh!)
Besides Angelina, you and stress are like peanut butter and honey sandwiches. You are ALWAYS under some legitimate crisis and if you REALLY want to lower the dial on the scale, you have to put a little more effort into picking healthier things to eat*.
Okay, I'm off my soap box. I love ya kid, don't start slackin' on me now.
*PS With that said, I ate at McDonald's last night and I am shamed, shamed, shamed. I don't even bother counting that diet catastrophe. But I worked out for a hour today at the Y, so I'm not a total hypocrite...
I think
That was me that deleted the last comment. It was too long. All just to say: mellow out old friend!!!
I'm not actually going wild with beer, just drinking a little more than I have been for the past month.
I'm not having any tonight and I'm glad I had the cheese. Why the hell should I go without cheese if I can have cheese and also keep my calories within my goal?!
I only had 1254 total calories today and I'm hungry now. Perhaps I should have had that apple you mentioned for dessert. Too late now. It's past 7.
Apples are filling, or so they say. Oh and I wanted to mention this thing I read in a magazine about ALL diet regimes, whether they are through Women's Day Magazine (Yes, You can lose 15 pounds in a Month!) or through the ole WW and Jenny Craig.
The reason why most people STARVE for the first 3 weeks of any diet program is that they start you off on a 1500/day calorie count, not 2000. They say, and I guess this makes sense, that by restricting the body's intake for the first 3 tortuous weeks, you help "jump start" your metabolism, so that when you go back to 1800-2000/day, you'll have made some progress and gotten used to lowering you body's need for sustenance. You don't have to agree with that approach, it's just what I read.
Go ahead, eat a 1/2 cup of parmesan, I don't care! I guess what I was trying to say was, if you look at the calories of 1 tbsp of parmesan, by swapping it with another healthy food, would you be more satisfied?? That's all I'm saying...and also, I guess, if you are to eat 2000/day, rather than splurging a lot of calories on such a small amount of food, wouldn't you rather trade it for something bulkier, that might fill you up, like an apple, carrots w/peanut butter, etc.
I can see I'm not going to exit it from this response gracefully, so...I'll just mind my own beeswax and eat how I want to eat and let you do the same.
Fine.
I'm shutting up now.
But now I want to know what you wrote before. Was it really nasty? Come on, tell me.
No, it wasn't nasty. Just a huge treatise on HOW MISGUIDED YOUR IDEAS WERE. Ha ha. I just sounded more defensive than I actually felt.
The main difference between you and I is that I don't see two tablespoons of parmesan as a calorie splurge. I look at what I consume in a day, and I assess the caloric damage ahead of time and the main thing is that I had a hell of a lot of calories to spare today, I could have eaten ten apples. Literally. But you and I, even though we enjoy eating a lot of the same foods (especially together!) really have a different view of certain things, most notably cheese.
Anyway, it seemed like I gave you the wrong impression from my post today-that I was somehow in diet peril and in danger of going back to a six pack a day beer habit.
Not happening. I'm doing really well and my flashcards are just going to make it easier to stay on track while things are getting moved around here and a little chaotic.
I'm not actually very stressed, incidentally. More beer this past week has been mostly celebratory. for the first time in a long time I feel like things are finally falling into place in my life.
Wow, this comment is the size of a whole post.
I like the flash cards. I just need to be waaaaay more organized. But I did bring my journal today so I can write down everything I eat which i must say is a rather frightening prospect. I'm one of those people who can't focus too much on calories or points because then I get obsessed with food and think about it so much more than before. So mostly I just try to eat less and watch the serving sizes. It seems to be working out so far.
I have had a journal for my food for as long as I can remember. I stopped writing down everything I ate about a year ago...I just get so tired of all the "stuff" you have to go through...why can't it just be easier? (Sorry, I started whining there)! I have since gained like 30 pounds so don't listen to me and keep doing all the "stuff" you have to go through. Keep up the good work and maybe one day I will be motivated again. :)
dude. i totally need to writing down what i'm eating (again ::sigh::). and i need to lay off the fucking muffins at night. eating a muffin does not help me miss aaron less.
I'm in agreement with Angelina on the cheese.
I'm also in agreement with Michelle on the points and just eating less and watching sizes. It makes it something that I can integrate into my life for long term.
That's just it. We all have to find what works for us for the long term, whether it be having a fish filet without the fries and diet coke once in a while, or having two tbps of parmensan instead of one or just watching sizes instead of counting calories. We are all different and have different motivators and we are all progressing with our different methods!
So, I'm proud of all of us!
I know you don't know me but I am Dominique's best friend from high school. As a person who is starting to watch what I eat as well, and have done WW for several years, I would like to tell you that 2 Tablespoons of Parmesan cheese is actually the least caloric out of all cheeses. 2 tablespoons of paremesan cheese is only 1 point. So eat on Angelina! Props to you all for your efforts, no matter how much you need to lose, the struggle is the same for all to figure out what to put in our mouthes each day!
